March Meeting

Another fantastic turnout for the Chalkstream Club and all enjoyed the brilliant talks by Richard Battersby and Shaun Leonard Director of the Wild Trout Trust.

Richard is head of our regions EA’s Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology (FBG) team! Their activities range from guerrilla tactics to catch poachers,to river restoration works, to monitoring our rivers, to advising on all relevant EA plans and projects for fisheries.

John Aplin & Richard Battersby

Then Shaun gave an illustrated & passionate talk on the roll of the Wild Trout Trust and how joining this conservation charity can really help our rivers – so if you are not a member – join now

Shaun Leonard & John Aplin

Many thanks to both Richard & Shaun for giving us their time & expertise, plus a huge thanks to John Aplin for organising the nights events. Also thank you to everyone who joined in to help pack away the chairs, wash up etc. without you the club wouldn’t exist….

Well that is it for this winter, but there will be one field trip to East Stoke to see the smolt run, so keep an eye out for the email…

March Meeting Announcement

The Dorset Chalk Stream Club will have its March social gathering in West Stafford Village hall on Friday the 27th March 2015 starting at 7.00pm
The evening will be a totally informal celebration of the Chalk Stream Club, with the usual breaks for food and drink, alongside two rather special guests and their presentations.

EAlogoRichard Battersby “A wander through Wessex looking at some of the work and priorities of the EA’s Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology (FBG) team”
For those people that don’t know me I manage a passionate team of technical experts in the EA’s FBG team at Blandford Forum. I am also a passionate conservationist and angler who is quite happy fishing for the wild trout of the West Dorset streams one day and long trotting for chalk stream roach the next. A keen amateur mycologist, butterfly nut and chalk stream enthusiast make it pretty much the perfect job!
Then after our buffet break

February Meeting

Februarys Meeting

The Dorset Chalk Stream Club held its February meeting on the 27th in the West Stafford village hall, a great venue that we have been using since our first gathering back in September 2012.

We were absolutely thrilled to have Budgie Price and Trevor Harrop from The Avon Roach Project with us for the evening.

I can tell you that these two guy’s presentation was nothing short of fantastic, one minute the room in total silence, people moved by the sheer passion and determination of this project, the next minute a room full of laughter, a great way to tell this most amazing journey of helping the Avon Roach….

We then had a break for a rather tasty buffet supper, again supplied by all who attended, lots of chatting and questions for Trevor and Budgie….

After our break we all sat and watched, again in silence the fabulous Roach Movie made by Hugh Miles…

Great to see a few new faces at the clubs gathering, including Hugh Miles, who also has also a great blog which you can read here

As always a massive thank you to everyone’s support, the great food, company and help with all the washing up at the end…

Looking forward to the next gathering which is the 27 th March…
