There are some days that will stay in your memory forever and today was such a day. It was the legend of flyfishing Charles Jardine’s birthday and to celebrate his son Alex and daughter Annabelle joined a small band of fellow anglers in John Aplin’s kitchen to eat bacon rolls, to plan the days grayling fishing and to sing Happy Birthday Charles….!
The day was a great success, with big grayling caught and of course even bigger grayling lost! (Glen!)
Then it was the main event at the Chalkstream Club, where Alex Jardine & his good friend Lewis Hendrie talked about the modern tactics used to target big fish, especially grayling. These two young anglers really put on a show and I know it stirred a lot of fisherman to really think & challenge their ‘traditional’ methods of flyfishing. (‘traditional’ in – I always fish this way)
Then there was the buffet break and Lewis & Alex were inundated with questions about their fishing and especially their grayling bugs!!
After the interval Lewis & Alex talked about their exploits in New Zealand and all I can say is I am totally relieved that I said ‘yes’ to a trip down under next year!! They did have a little technical problem with their slides, but at 23:00 they still had a queue of anglers with even more questions for them to answer.
A huge thank you to John Aplin for organising the days events, to Charles Jardine for the cheese and an even bigger thank you to Alex & Lewis who really are fantastic ambassadors for the art of flyfishing. Thanks also to all those who helped in the kitchen, pack away the chairs etc. the club couldn’t continue without you – thanks.
PS> Next meeting is on Friday 27th February 2015
