A 5,000 year old polissoir is found

Not far from my home, just three miles as the crow goes

There’s a valley of sarsen stones, we all know it, that we thought

Unknown to all, some 5,000 years ago a Neolithic honed their tools

They used just one stone, a polissoir

Since then, overgrown and forgotten in the mists of time

Volunteers arrived to clear the way, two knew archaeology and spotted the smooth

Polissoirs are rare, as rare as hens teeth, earthfast even rarer

It was big news, no one told, they recorded and studied to look for clues

Then they announced all to the world, pats on backs and TV crews

I ventured up one misty morn, it was calm and very warm

Found the stone and took my shots

There was no sense of others who have passed before

Not like the circles of stone, where spirits do roam

Lets hope the polissoir is forgotten once more

Remembered by scholars

But not by those types that left a boot print on the smooth!
