Up early for my weekly trip to Morrison’s, down there for just after 8am. Nice and quiet, no queue going in and inside was relatively normal. Still lots of staff re-stacking the shelves, must go a bit later next week. On my return journey, I had a cheeky drive along Preston Beach Road and saw the sea, looking very seductive. Back through Littlemoor, so I popped in the cheap shop to see if they had any compost, nope, but I did buy two more bags of logs.
Home to strip off and shower. Email from the Camera Club through with the results for the ‘Movement’ competition, judged by Maria Falconer. To my amazement I had won third with my Yellow photograph, that I took along Radipole Park Drive – fantastic. Here it is with my other three entries:- 3rd in the Bridport Camera Club Movement competition. Maria Falconer says: Reflections can be such a cliché but this one most certainly is not. The sense of symmetry (both horizontally and vertically), contributes to the strong compositional structure, as does the ‘frame within a frame’ devise made by the black and yellow poles. And, of course it’s no accident that you chose to photograph a yellow car in this visually engaging scene. I’m delighted that you weren’t tempted to clone out the road sign as it provides a visual bridge connecting the two halves. Well seen and executed.
Maria Falconer says: A good, graphic image. The central framing really works in this case. The slightly surreal feeling of the image would, for me, have been enhanced by by removing the bottom of the image and therefore the taking away the context (or the grounding) of the railings. It would make the image a bit more uncomfortable ( in a compositional way) and that often enhances a contemporary photograph (for me). The juxtaposition between the harsh, hard intransigence of the railings and fluidity of the water really works.Maria Falconer says: This is a very good attempt of getting a motion shot which you have succeeded in doing. The picture can be improved if there was more space for the lady to walk into and the shot taken a fraction of a second earlier so as to capture the right foot with the heel just touching the ground. If you didn’t use, try the cameras motor drive to get a series of pics and then choose the best one.
Maria Falconer says: A strong and vivid capture of the theme of the image. I like the contrast between the static figure in the centre and the movement on either side. Perhaps a couple of the pairs of legs are a little confusing and fragmented but an interesting and arresting image.
Why are there helicopters continually flying in slow circles over Dorchester, this one is the main culprit (hero image), but there are others. Are they spraying Government mind-altering drugs? (Turns out they are just from Portland training base)
We were both a bit fed up today, I sorted out my log pile and a walk in the afternoon. Lizzie’s goodie box arrived but no cakes, so we popped over the hill get them. Pasty for dinner and clapped for the NHS at 8pm.
